Low Head Pilot Station began operation in 1805, it was the 3rd station to be established in Australia and has run continuously since 1833. In the early days the Tamar River proved to be a very complex and dangerous estuary which required the skill and knowledge of local boat pilots.
The precinct offers a diverse range of 19th century buildings which remain remarkably intact, and functioning on different levels. The precinct now offers a Museum, Café, Penguin Tours as well as holiday accommodation, located in the original Pilot Station buildings.
